Reducing Environmental Pollution
January - December 2023
About
In 2021, FEE together with its five programmes released the new 10-year strategic plan, called GAIA 20:30, with three critical goals in mind; to empower climate action, reduce environmental pollution and protect global biodiversity. And we are making progress together! During the Biodiversity Campaign 2022, which was consisting of a set of activities focusing on the protection of global biodiversity, we have seen great progress from our global network.
But to truly achieve the ambitious goals set in our strategy, and meet the even greater goal of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees, we will need everyone’s support.
This is why Green Key is excited to introduce activities focusing on another goal of GAIA 20:30: The reduction of Environmental Pollution!
More specifically, we want to focus on reducing litter, waste, and invisible pollutants by encouraging more responsible consumption (and production) of things and taking a more circular economy approach to the way the hospitality and tourism industry works.
But how do you plan on doing that?!
We have prepared three main activities: quiz, courses, and webinars, and all of them are explained in detail below. And just like with the GAIA 20:30 Biodiversity Campaign EVERYONE is invited!
You can choose to participate in everything, or just those activities you find most interesting.
All the activities are an opportunity to learn more about or take action to reduce environmental pollution!
Together, we can change the world!

ABOUT Activities
Green Key developed activities focusing on one of the goals of the GAIA 20:30 strategy, Reducing Environmental Pollution. The activities are open from January until December 2023 and are consisting of the following:
1. Quiz
Green Key together with Blue Flag created a quiz about how tourism and pollution are connected.
The quiz is consisting of 13 questions, lasting approximately 8 minutes, and is available in multiple languages.
If you would like to test your knowledge and at the same time learn more about pollution in the tourism industry, click on the links below with the language of your choice.

2. GAIA 20:30 Pollution Course

By taking a course, you can learn more about:
Types of pollution and its sources.
Impact of pollution on the natural environment and ecosystems.
Impact of pollution on human health, and pollution-caused diseases and disorders.
How to minimise pollution as individuals, corporations, and national governments.

For hotels and other hospitality establishments, textiles constitute an important source of natural resources consumption and potential pollution (through chemicals) at the fabrication stage as well as during its lifetime. From daily use of bedsheets and towels in the guest rooms to restaurants tablecloths, or staff uniforms to name only a few, all can have a significant negative impact on the environment and increase the carbon footprint of the industry.
During this 90mn session, our experts share their knowledge and recommendations on how to minimize the effects for the environment and climate through a more sustainable production and use of textiles in the tourism industry.
